Short Biography
Born 1973 in Seoul/Lives and works in Seoul
Sangdon Kim’s addresses socio-political and ecological issues through research-based, collaborative community projects in such contested sites as Seoul, Pyeong-taek, Yeojoo, Busan and most recently Dongducheon. His projects address the effect of government policies and economic globalization on minoritized citizens and the creative potential of a society. Operating at the intersection of art and cultural activism, Kim creates a meeting ground where local communities, activists, and artists can engage in productive dialogue and provocative understanding of the area of focus. Kim utilizes various methodologies such as participatory workshops, local gatherings, street parties, and collaborative productions designed according to the needs and issues of each context to engage diverse groups of audiences and artists in dialogue. He buttresses these on-site activities with research and collection of literary/vernacular texts, interviews, documents, and statistics. At the final presentation stage, Kim’s public projects take the form of installation incorporating multiple components such as photographs, texts, videos, diagrams or an artist book. His first solo exhibition was at alternative space pool, Seoul (2004).
